Determining the Best Guest for Your Podcast Audience
The best guest you can have on your podcast is the one who most benefits and inspires your audience. Period. Full Stop.
Sustainable podcast growth comes from serving your current audience in such a way that they want to tell others about your show. Your new listeners become fans and want to tell others, and so on and so on. As a result you have an ever-growing body of fans committed to you and your show. Keep this in the front of your mind as you consider who to invite on your podcast.
Too often, podcasters try to find guests who would “blow up” their downloads or result in major exposure. Having those exciting one-time guests might increase stats for that single episode. But few to none of the new listeners will download your next one. You end up serving someone else’s fans.
Below are a few questions you can ask yourself to make sure you are having the perfect podcast guest on your show:
What are specific topics that my audience likes me to cover? Ask your audience if you’re not sure, and then research who else talks about / writes about / thinks about that topic.
What podcasts do I like to listen to that are similar to mine? If I like them, my audience probably will too. Need some fresh ideas? Do a search on the Blubrry Directory, it is full of them.
Who is a podcast listener that I have a good rapport with? Highlighting audience members on the podcast is a great way to make them feel special. Look carefully through your comments for prospects, and reach out.
Having podcast guests who serve your audience is far more sustainable and appealing than having guests that serve your show. Use the three questions above and find the ideal guests for your show.
