TechnoRV’s Eric Johnson explains how to get fast, reliable internet in Episode 283

June 18, 2024

Whether Workampers run a business from their RV, or just like to surf the internet and watch cat videos, having a strong, stable internet connection is important for many RVers. Today, I am interviewing an expert in data plans and equipment to make connecting to the internet super-simple.

In the past, campground Wi-Fi connections were unreliable, which caused many RVers to rely on the closest cell towers to provide internet service. That often created congestion and reduced data speeds to a crawl.

Ten years later, connecting to the internet has vastly improved. RVers’ entertainment tastes switched from watching commercial TV shows on cable to consuming their own customized content online. Internet speeds seem to increase exponentially every year as new technology is developed.

Today, I am interviewing Eric Johnson, the owner of TechnoRV. Eric has been on top of all the developments taking place in the RV industry when it comes to internet speeds and equipment to connect all the devices people bring with them when they travel.

He has first-hand experience. Eric and his wife, Tami, have been full-time RVers for years. He has vast knowledge of all the equipment available to RVers to make the Workamping experience even more enjoyable.

I have interviewed Eric several times over the years and I always learn something new. This time, I learned TechnoRV developed their own data plans specifically with RVers in mind.

Connecting to the internet was a source of contention for many years. When I was full-time RVing between 2014 and 2017, I had to use one of the puck-like devices Eric described to create a mobile hotspot to connect my laptop to the internet. Even worse, I was limited to 40 gigabytes of data per month.

If Windows or one of the drivers on my laptop required an update, I could easily consume 5 gigabytes of data within an hour as the data streamed in at speeds less than 1 megabyte per second.

Eric understood the frustration many RVers experienced. So, he worked with Verizon and T-Mobile to create streaming accounts just for RVers. TechnoRV’s plans range from $129 per month for 300 gigabytes of data to $289 for 650 gigabytes of data.

Eric and Tami personally tested a lot of equipment to ensure the routers could withstand the rigors of travel while seamlessly connecting to various cell towers, campground Wi-Fi and even Starlink satellite services, if Workampers opted to use it.

Today, TechnoRV sells only Pepwave routers because of their durability, speed and reliability. Each Pepwave router has at least one modem in it, and some have two.

The routers are super-easy to use. Once the Pepwave router is powered on, it automatically establishes connections to cell service and, if enabled, the strongest campground Wi-Fi signal.

Best of all, if customers request it, TechnoRV sets up Pepwave routers before they are shipped. All customers need to do is unpack the equipment and plug it in. The TechnoRV staff has already configured the cellular connections so they will automatically look for and connect to the closest towers.

TechoRV has produced a comprehensive guide to mobile internet connections. It is available free at technorv.com/pages/guides. Free guides are also available for electric safety, navigation, tire safety, propane safety, water filtration and other topics.

Eric has also produced more than 160 videos about various equipment designed to improve the RV lifestyle. They can be found on the company’s YouTube channel at youtube.com/@Technorv.
