Ignaz Semmelweis (PBS.org) – Tried to convince doctors to wash their hands to reduce childbed fever; “Dr. Semmelweis’s behavior became more and more erratic and he was finally committed to an insane asylum on July 30, 1865.” So clarification is in order: it sounds like he was not locked up for his theories, but the reason for his mental breakdown is not clear.
