Ep 290: “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice”

September 10, 2024

We keep it real with Tim Burton’s “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” and discuss:

  • Cinematography, closeups vs mediums and wides for comedy & connection;
  • Story & Writing, but/therefore storytelling, sequels honoring their predecessors, Lydia’s arc;
  • and other such stuff and things and stuff.

With movies, you are always in search of a good story, one that everyone will relate to and love. – Don Bluth

Notes & References:

Matt Stone & Trey Parker on storytelling using “Therefore / But” (YouTube) – The driving idea behind this technique isn’t to finagle the words into your outline, it’s to check and make sure that events unfold due to characters taking an action and making sure the world is reacting to the decisions that are being made. This creates a dynamic and compelling story! (It’s not the only way to tell a story of course, but a great method nonetheless.)

1st Beetlejuice end scene of Lydia dancing (YouTube) – the essence of joy distilled into a 4 minute clip – yes I’m posting it again this week because it’s effing perfect
