Yvette Stewart - Fall Bird Migration, Beverley Thompson - Do Antidepressants Work?

August 26, 2022

Furry Friday has gone to the birds! We are thrilled to be joined by Yvette Stewart, Community Outreach Coordinator for Audubon Texas with ways we can help our birds migrate this fall. Migratory birds are making their nightly trek south for the winter. Help protect our feathered friends by turning off all non-essential lighting outside and inside from August 15–November 30 at 11 pm to 6 am each night. If you want to know how your community can participate in Lights Out Texas? Check out this FAQ. Audubon Texas is the state branch of the National Audubon Society, and Yvette currently heads up their “Bird City Texas” project, an urban conservation certification program, as well as the “High School Conservation Program in partnership with the Young Women’s Preparatory Network. Learn more about Yvette and the Audubon Texas conservation efforts at tx.audubon.org.

Next, Beverley Thomson joins us to discuss a new study on serotonin and the effects of antidepressants. Thomson, author of Antidepressed, calls this a wake-up call for more people to re-evaluate their dependence on antidepressants. "It is vital that the millions taking antidepressants become better informed to understand the complex issues around dependence, adverse effects and withdrawal," she says. Of course, stopping abruptly or changing prescriptions should always be done with proper medical guidance. Listen to the show for valuable information your doctor may not tell you when suggesting antidepressants. Find the book here.
