Extra thoughts . . .

Time comparisons

Remember, it’s all relative. Be careful about disparaging your slow pace because that could be someone else’s dream pace. Comparisons can be demotivating. We’re all slow compared to Eliud Kipchoge!

Be careful of copying strategies used by elite runners. Things like gear and nutrition are such individual things that you want to test them out for yourself.

Back in 2015 when we recorded this episode I said that I’d likely never break 3:00 in the marathon and would be static about breaking 3:30. Little did I know that by consistent effort I would be able to run 3:19:55 five years later at the age of 41.

Courses closing down early

One big issue we’ve heard from slower runners is races advertising a certain course time limit and then dismantling parts of the course early, aid stations not being stocked for slower runners, and the finish area running out of food and drinks. It’s smart to research cut off times and read reviews before signing up for a race.
