For the 10th episode of the CIO podcast hosted by Healthcare IT Today, we’re sitting down with Will Weider, CIO at PeaceHealth. This podcast was one of the first I recorded back when we started the podcast in March 2021, but by my own error in planning it got pushed later in the schedule. The bad news is this could have helped you earlier. The good news is that Weider’s insights are still as valuable for healthcare CIOs today as they were when we recorded them months ago.

Weider has been one of my healthcare CIO heroes since I first started blogging about EMR and Health IT almost 16 years ago. As I started writing about he industry I discovered his blog, Candid CIO, where he shared his experience as a healthcare CIO. I always enjoyed learning from his experience and expertise and we often exchanged comments on each other’s sites. While Weider isn’t blogging much lately, he’s still sharing those insights on Twitter (@CandidCIO) and word on the street is you can find him on Tik Tok as well.

In this episode, Weider shares a number of practical insights and perspectives, but my favorite part was when he shared how he could use his strengths to be successful as a CIO even if they didn’t match the skills of other successful CIOs. In this case, he referenced how different he was a CIO as compared to Ed Marx who was on the CIO Podcast previously talking about what made him a successful CIO. There’s an extremely powerful message there for CIOs who maybe feel inadequate as compared to other CIOs. There are multiple pathways to success as a CIO and understanding your strengths and weaknesses is part of the process.
