379. The health risks of retiring early
Retiring early could actually worsen your health, according to a new study published in the Journal of Economic Behavior & Organization. Researchers at Binghamton University, State University of New York studied participants in a voluntary pension program in China and concluded that early retirement may accelerate cognitive decline in late adulthood. On one hand, early retirement showed some positive health benefits, including reduced consumption of alcohol. The researchers also found early retirees reported lower rates of volunteering and social interaction. In particular, the reduced social interaction from early retirement had two negative effects – reduced social, emotional and physical well-being as well as less mental and intellectual stimulation, which appeared to accelerate cognitive decline.
