233. Women lose five months of sleep due to their periods

July 20, 2022

While many people don’t think of insomnia as a typical symptom of premenstrual syndrome, a majority of women do struggle with it during their periods. According to new research from Bodyform, 69 percent of women experience decreased quality and quantity of sleep during their periods. Close to 7 of every 10 women struggle with sleep changes beginning three to six days before their periods. Largely due to hormone changes throughout the month, women are 25 percent more likely to have insomnia than men. And over the course of their lives, women lose about 3,800 hours of sleep – or roughly five months – due to their periods.
