It was 7am. I was in full flow, constructing a blog post about artistic ambition 'DUH DUH DUH', a BBC news alert. Normally my phone would be on silent to avoid distractions but I was on call so the volume was full.

My normal response to the sound of the BBC news alert 'Oh crap, what the hell has happened' was muted by virtue of the fact that Nic was asleep after a night shift. I just reached over to grab my phone and check that the world was still in one piece...

My jaw dropped. My eyes got a bit blurry and I let out a small noise. Whaaaa!?

First thoughts turned to my friend Peter. I sent him a message to check he was OK before returning to my state of shock. What had happened? Where did that come from? Surely this is not true; he has literally just released a new album. 2 days ago. And the latest video... Lazarus. What is going on?

As the news started trickling through and it become clear that it was the end of 18 months with cancer I began experiencing all sorts of emotions. Such sadness at the loss of one of the world's ultimate stars and then astonishment at the beautiful choreography of this moment.

That is 'so Bowie' I kept thinking. To retain the integrity, the mystery, the love of art. How dignified, how special. Blackstar, his now apparent parting gift was to take on a whole new meaning. Remarkably orchestrated, the ultimate boundary shift by the man who has been pushing boundaries his whole career in everything he has done.

The perfect way to say goodbye. Oh what sadness. The tragedy and inevitability of death.

Since Monday morning I've been reading the many different tributes, listening to the music and reflecting on the legacy of this remarkable renaissance man.
