#084: The Social Introvert Problem [Podcast]
This week I share my thoughts on a trend I have noticed a lot recently. It has cropped up in a few discussions on the topic of introversion. There is a tendency to build links between being an introvert, and being sociable/not-sociable.
In this episode I consider how and why we should frame our relationship with introversion outside of these social stories. And that we should take responsibility, choosing not to see ourselves as in some way anti-social or naturally disliking people.
All Introverts are Social Introverts
I have come across a few articles recently by people trying to make sense of how they reconcile their ‘introvert’ label with the fact they are actually very sociable and enjoy the company of others. I address this and talk about why the ‘social introvert’ label is perhaps not that helpful because it assumes beneath the surface that this is an unusual combination. All introverts are social introverts.
We must see ourselves, all of us, first and foremost as social beings. It’s how we’ve evolved, it’s how we adapt, and it’s how we’ve survived for so long without getting outdone by stronger and less forgiving animals. In theory we work together, we are community, and we are nothing without other people. We are not independent, we are interdependent. Regardless of where we land on the introvert-extrovert continuum, we must remember and understand that.
“When you’re tired and drained, how do you recharge? What gives you energy: staying home, or going out? If attending a social gathering and being around people sounds energizing, you’re an extrovert. If it sounds draining, you’re an introvert, simple as that.â€
This fantastic summary is from an article by Megan at We are all Made of Stars and perfectly encapsulates what we are talking about. She says “While we can learn certain skills, like public speaking, our basic nature doesn’t change. Once an introvert, always an introvert. And introverts can fool you by being very good with people.â€
