#067: You can’t control what others think, only how you think of others

January 13, 2014

Artists free themselves from what already is, and allow their minds to imagine what could be.

In the inspiring book Manage Your Day-To-Day from 99u there is a great quote:

“You cannot imagine what will be if you are constantly concerned with what already is”.

We need to stop worrying about what everyone else is doing. We need to embrace vulnerability because, along with connection it is the foundation of creativity.

Are you learning?

Are you real?

Or do you find yourself restricted to the boundaries set by others?

Because if you do don’t worry, it’s normal.

But it’s also not the end of the story. You don’t have to stay there.

I’ve recently been super aware of this internal battle when thinking about my new album and discussing with people about how we’re going to approach the release of Year 0.

It can be hard to think creatively, especially when plans are being influenced by the following factors:

1. Funding Needs

2. A Propensity to Over-Complicate

3. Conflicting Motives

4. Not Being Clear on Objectives

The more we look at what others do with envy and the more we see others as competition rather than inspiration, the more boxed in we become and the more imprisoned our imaginations can get.
