#064: Creativity, Leadership, and Loneliness [Podcast]
We all get lonely. It’s a part of what it means to be human. It can happen for the briefest moment, or it can be terminal. And it can occur even if you are constantly surrounded by people.
In this episode I talk about:
- Why people in creative roles, leaders, and difference makers are all susceptible to loneliness
- Some of the things we can do to help prevent loneliness as creatives, leaders, and difference makers
- Why those you expect support from might not be the most supportive people
- Why people sometimes choose to disagree with you even though they actually wholeheartedly agree with everything you say
There are times when we have to head into things fully knowing that we will be lonely when we do. Or at least we should be aware that they could result in isolation, disconnectedness, and ultimately loneliness. This is especially true in the context of leadership, creativity, and art.
Not everyone is going to like your style or your substance. They’re not going to understand what you’re trying to do, or even why you’re trying to do it. They might second guess your motives, project their own expectations and experiences onto you, and criticise a lot of what you do. That is a lonely place to be.
