#063: What Do You Have in the Bank for Your Rainy Day? [Podcast]
It’s been one of those months. I feel like I’ve been hanging on by the tips of my fingers. Over the past five or six weeks or so we have had all sorts of unexpected things going on and it has been pretty hard work.
Not long ago I was asked by a friend of mine, ‘what do you have in your bank for a rainy day?’
He wasn’t talking about money. He was referring to well being, looking after myself, having a coping strategy for those inevitable troughs that come through life. It was a very interesting question and one I’ve been thinking about a lot, especially recently.
When things are going well it can be difficult to entertain the thought that they wont always be that way. In the same way when you’re at a low point it is hard to summon optimistic and positive thoughts about the future.
But something I’ve discovered is the importance of structural frequency. Routine, ritual, tradition. They are the bones of life. We build upon them and it’s been so important for me personally to keep some kind of structure, meet self-imposed deadlines and attempt to maintain the structural integrity of life. This has been especially true of the blog and podcast.
Knowing that I need to keep to a publishing schedule has meant that I have kept momentum, and that momentum provides motivation to get back in and keep everything going. Even though I’m doing that by the very tips of my fingers.
It has also helped that I have had a surplus pool of posts ready to use for such times. That was useful preparation for my rainy season.
Do you have things in place for a rainy day? Have you ensured that the stuff that you are doing, the goals you have set yourself, and the things that require your own self-motivation are not compromised when stuff gets difficult? Please share thoughts in the comments.
