#062: Ideas can Be Nasty Little Critters. They Bite. [Podcast]

November 18, 2013

Ideas baffle me. They are crazy. The idea that you can have an idea. I love it.

You can just look at something and form an idea around it.

We come up with solutions to problems, names for things, identities, tools, new (or ingrained) ways of seeing and approaching what we are presented with.

Ideas interact with the world and make things happen. Sometimes they emerge after a lot of work, i.e. we try to come up with them, search for them etc. Others just come to you at an unexpected moment: “ooh wow I’ve just had an idea”.

Sometimes you know where an idea fits; sometimes you don’t.

Ideas come and go in the blink of an eye. They don’t stick around for you to commit them to paper, tape, video – if you’re not prepared then they don’t care. It is very frustrating to know that you’ve had an amazing idea but you can’t recall the slightest detail.

Ideas Cannot Be Owned or Controlled

There is a problem on the flip side too. When you try to own and control ideas then the demise of the idea is almost inevitable.

When we allow our ego to take over we really run the risk of stifling and strangling the very things that we work for and believe in.

If we try to imprison ideas then they can torment us, confuse us, complicate things, and poison our minds, turning us paranoid and inward looking. This happens time and time again when we try to possess and exploit the ideas that we are given.

Loads more on this stuff in this week’s episode.
