#061: Do You Think With Your Head too Much? [Podcast]
Carl Jung, went to Taos Peublo in New Mexico in 1925. He met with the chief of the people, Ochwiay Biano. According to his people, Biano told Jung that the Whites were ‘mad’-uneasy, restless, always wanting something.
When asked why he thought they were mad, the chief replied that it was because they thought with their heads, a sure sign of mental illness among his tribe. “Why, of course. What do you think with?†Jung asked him in surprise.
“We think here,†he said, indicating his heart.
Do you think with your head or your heart? What does it mean to think with your heart? Surely all thinking comes from your head.
Heart thinking is not:
- Surrendering your behaviour to your emotions
– Feeling your way through life, responding to impulses
It is having the courage to transcend reason. It’s having the guts to listen to your gut, to change your mind when you know what you need to do.
Heart thinking is about integrity. It’s about character. It’s about acting when you know what’s right, not when you’re told what’s right. It’s about feeling the time to change.
Which voice do you listen to? Only about 10% of the time do I go against the apparently better judgement of people around me and my own ego and do something because I know and believe it to be the right thing to do. Stepping out against yourself is not easy. It doesn’t make sense.
When we live in a society that puts such a high value on logic and reason do we feel like we can justify acting ‘because it feels right’?
He(Art) and creativity
Creative living requires ‘heart thinking’.
It’s not rational or efficient to paint, to write, to sing, to love people, to help people who can’t help you in return. None of it contains much logic or reason. But art adds value and brings meaning to the world and to the lives of others. It’s necessary because it is necessary.
Heart thinking is art thinking. It’s where we need to be, what we need to find. It’s a life long pursuit, and it’s worth it.
Let’s stop being ‘mad’-uneasy, restless, and always wanting something.
Let’s start thinking with our hearts.
