#060: What Could You Grow by Doing a Little Bit, Every Day? [Podcast]

November 04, 2013

October marked the first anniversary of my return to journal writing (using the DayOne app, which I can’t recommend highly enough). I managed just over 200 entries over the past year and clocked up the best part of 200,000 words. This is the result of between 10 and 20 minutes commitment just under two out of every three days. So not much effort really.

In this week’s podcast I introduce the concept of A Little Bit Every Day, which is a project I am forcing myself to do. I’m keeping a video diary of the small things that I need to do in the run up to the release of my new album. I hate the last bit between the completion of a project and its release. I’m not very good at staying motivated through promotion, engagement, and ‘getting it out there’.

“Stop beating yourself up. You are a work in progress; which means you get there a little at a time, not all at once.”

A Recipe for Inaction

Do you stay focussed on the big picture? Do you become paralysed, fearful and overwhelmed by the prospect of the result that feels far off?

This is what stops me from doing what needs to be done and why I’m trying this Little Bit Every Day to see if I can acknowledge the micro-choices that I can make with great frequency that will build into something bigger and better than I can imagine.

I find it reassuring to think that I am in a position to do something right now. And so are you. Even the things that might seem small or apparently insignificant build their impact when they are repeated over and over.

A little bit often, soon goes a long way.
We Choose. Over and Over.

Little by little our choices add up. Many times each day we can choose to stay still or to move things forward.

The decision to use a spare five minutes to send an email, personally reply to three or four people on Twitter, or even just post a status update might seem fairly insignificant, but in the grand scheme of things it’s not. Three or four replies repeated everyday is 21 a week, 84 a month. Who’s to say where that might lead?
