#058: Give Way to the Events that Draw Your Roadmap [Podcast]

October 22, 2013

Nic (my wife) and I were in a car crash last week. It was the first time I’ve ever been in one. It happened just 3 days before the 10 year anniversary of me passing my test. My car, which also recently celebrated its 10 year birthday, was written off. It all happened because a lady who was coming up a side street just as we were intersecting it ‘didn’t see the give way sign’.

It’s been a tough week, trying to sort out all the problems that come with having a car written off in a crash that was not your fault. If it’s every happened to you then you will know how frustrating it is.

Life = Events + Choices

But it got me thinking, and this week’s podcast is the product of those thoughts.

Life is little more than a series of events. Who you are is the result of the choices you make in response to each event. Character is built in the space between the event and the choice. Who you really are is found within that moment. It might be a split second, it might be longer, but every day there are different types of events and there are different choices, each one a door to a variety of outcomes.

In this episode I talk about four types of events:

1. Expected: Static
2. Expected: Controlled
3. Unexpected: Personal
4. Unexpected: Collective

We all experience each of these types of events, but how ready are you? How can you use your expectations to leave space to respond more appropriately and with greater clarity to the events that you do not expect?

Are there areas of your life where you could be more proactive so that when the unexpected comes your way you are in a better place to respond to it? These are some of the questions I’ve been asking myself this week, at least.
