When the Fed spiked interest rates from ~0 to ~5% over the past year, it had 3 main effects: 1. Undercut value of bonds, especially long-dated bonds. 2. Made lending more expensive, particularly for large purchases like real estate that have to be financed. 3. Increased government borrowing costs. These effects are just math and have to play out through the financial system. I think they will roughly correspond to the 3 stages of the financial crisis we’re in: 1. CRE crisis precipitated by credit markets seizing up for new loans and impairment of existing CRE loan portfolios (which are also unrealized losses). 3. Government debt crisis precipitated by spike in debt service costs at federal level, budget deficits at state and local level, and sovereign debt issues at international level. - That deal has been waylaid by two intensifying federal investigations. One is focused on whether preliminary merger discussions between Digital World and Trump Media violated federal securities laws. The other investigation is looking at whether a group of early investors in Digital World — who were brought into the deal by Mr. Orlando — engaged in improper trading.
The merger of Digital World and Trump Media has been held up by investigations, but executives are rushing to complete the deal by a Sept. 8 deadline.

- The Trump campaign, along with a number of astute legal observers, believes the judge hearing the case being brought by Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg, Juan Merchan, could issue a gag order. The UK Daily Mail reports:
Donald Trump‘s legal team is preparing for a New York judge to slap a gag order on the former president on Monday, DailyMail.com can reveal, a day before he is due to be arrested in Manhattan.
- A gag order issued by an anti-Trump judge could be a convenient way to put an end to the former president’s 2024 presidential campaign. If its terms are excessive, Mr. Trump couldn’t campaign if he honors it. If he violates it and is held in contempt, he can’t campaign in a state that would extradite him. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ previous announcement that he would refuse an order to extradite the former president could potentially mean that Trump would campaign from his adoptive home state of Florida and nowhere else.
