- Sammy Roth, a writer for the LA Times and the weekly Boiling Point newsletter, published an article in which he claimed that many people of color in the Los Angeles area are subjected to a form of environmental racism as a result of the presence of affluent and white drivers.
- Roth shared a new study from USC researchers that found Angelenos who drove more were subjected to less air pollution than those who drove less.
- “It may sound like a paradox, but it’s not. It’s a function of the racism that shaped this city and its suburbs, and continues to influence our daily lives — and a stark reminder of the need for climate solutions that benefit everyone,” said Roth.
- According to Roth, the primary finding of the study is that the amount of lung-damaging “fine particulate matter” that residents of a specific area of LA County are exposed to decreases by an estimated 0.62% for every one percent increase in miles driven to and from work by those residents.

NYC Residents Say They’re ‘Terrified’ by City’s New Climate Law
- A New York City climate law regulating emissions is set to impose harsh penalties on larger buildings, many of them residential, that don’t comply by 2024, forcing building boards and residents to make difficult financial decisions, according to The New York Times.
- Local Law 97 is part of the city’s 2019 Climate Mobilization Act and aims to reduce carbon emissions by 40% by 2030 and reach net zero by 2050 by targeting buildings, which are believed to be the city’s largest polluters, according to the NYT. But the strict regulations put building managers in a difficult position, forcing them to choose between costly energy upgrades and massive fines.
- One building manager, Craig Hart, told the NYT he could install solar panels on a roof that’s going to need a $650,000 replacement in coming year, install a new boiler system that will have to be replaced in a few years as emissions standards become more stringent, or face massive fines for noncompliance.
- “I’m terrified of it,” Arlene Bett, a 60-year-old longtime resident who paid off her one-bedroom apartment in the complex but worries about her $500 monthly maintenance fee growing. “I will not be able to afford it, and there’s no place cheaper.”

Kevin McCarthy Signs Bill Killing Biden’s ESG Rule For Retirement Plan Investments
- “President Biden is prioritizing politics over his own people,” House Speaker Kevin McCarthy said at a signing ceremony for a bill that would nullify a Department of Labor rule that allowed retirement plan investment managers to prioritize environmental or social factors (ESG) over financial benefits when making investment decisions should it pass into law.
- “Hardworking Americans don’t need a regulation from Washington that steers them into higher fee, lower performing, less diversified funds, and that’s what these so-called ESG funds are,” Rep. Andy Barr (R-KY), who brought the bill to Congress, said. “Where people who are invested in ESG — unwittingly and without their consent in many cases — they suffer losses far greater than the average investor who is broadly and diversely invested across the board. And it’s true: these funds carry 43 percent higher fees which also eat their returns.”

Biden Demands 15% Budget Increase for IRS, Boosting $79B Previously Allocated
- President Joe Biden requested American taxpayers increase IRS funding by 15 percent in fiscal year 2024 to crack down on tax cheats — even as his son Hunter Biden is under investigation for tax violations.
- The proposed 15 percent increase is in addition to the previously allocated $79 billion over the next decade from the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act.
- “Biden’s $6.8 trillion budget requests an additional $1.8 billion for the IRS, boosting the agency’s overall funding to $14.1 billion,” the Washington Times reported. “The additional revenue would account for a 15% boost from the more than $12 billion that Congress approved for the agency in December”:

California regulators closed Silicon Valley Bank on Friday. The FDIC was named receiver.

Silicon Valley Bank has been closed by the California Department of Financial Protection and Innovation, and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) has been appointed receiver, becoming the first FDIC-backed institution to fail this year. The news comes amid a crisis at parent SVB Financial Group SIVB, , which lost a record 60% of its value on Thursday, after it disclosed large losses from securities sales and announced a dilutive stock offering along with a profit warning. The FDIC said all insured depositors will have full access to their accounts no later than Monday morning. Uninsured depositors will get a receivership certificate and may be entitled to dividends once the FDIC sells the bank’s assets.

US Federal Reserve sets up new specialist team to supervise crypto sector
- The US Federal Reserve is putting together a “specialised team of experts” to monitor the cryptosphere as it looks to manage risk and promote innovation.
- In a speech at the Peterson Institute for International Economics in Washington DC, the US central bank’s vice chair for supervision, Michael Barr, says the team will help the Fed “learn from new developments and make sure we’re up to date on innovation in this sector”.

Colleges Ditch ‘Women’s History Month’ For ‘Womxn’s History Month’
- Several colleges and universities are choosing to celebrate “Womxn’s History Month” to recognize women, transgender and non-binary individuals.
- The term “womxn” is a spin-off of the word “woman” to “avoid the suggestion of sexism” and “to be inclusive of trans women and nonbinary people,” according to Dictionary.com.

- Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg’s predecessor previously rejected the Trump ‘hush payments’ case because it wouldn’t stand up in court.
- Fast-forward a couple years and now the Manhattan DA has revived the Stormy Daniel hush payments probe to counter Trump’s 2024 White House bid.
- According to the New York Times, the Manhattan DA began presenting evidence to a grand jury last earlier this year.

- The video sharing app TikTok is coming under increased scrutiny because it is owned by the Chinese Communist party and people believe it’s basically a spy app.

- The House passed a bill to prohibit federal officials from pressuring social media platforms to censor content.
- The Protecting Speech from Government Interference Act states that it is intended to “prohibit Federal employees from advocating for censorship of viewpoints in their official capacity, and for other purposes.”
- The bill passed by a vote of 219-206.
- “It is inappropriate and dangerous for the federal government to decide what lawful speech is allowed on a private sector platform,” Comer said during a hearing on the matter on Wednesday.

- On Thursday, after hackers seized control of state media, Russians were warned to immediately evacuate to underground nuclear shelters and take anti-radiation pills.
- A message warning of a nuclear missile strike on Russian soil momentarily interrupted TV and radio broadcasts in Yekaterinburg, Moscow, and the Sverdlovsk regions of Russia, Telegraph reported.
- Citizens were advised to take calcium iodide pills, put on gas masks, and seek shelter immediately.
- The Russian emergencies ministry revealed that a widespread cyber attack on government broadcasters was to blame for the false alert.
- ‘A false air raid alert was broadcast in Moscow after servers of radio stations and TV channels were hacked,’ the Russian emergencies ministry said per Insider Paper.
The warning was the third time Russian broadcasters had been targeted with similar stunts in the past month.
The Telegraph could not immediately verify the reports that originated in Russia.

- THE UNITED STATES Federal Bureau of Investigation has acknowledged for the first time that it purchased US location data rather than obtaining a warrant. While the practice of buying people’s location data has grown increasingly common since the US Supreme Court reined in the government’s ability to warrantlessly track Americans’ phones nearly five years ago, the FBI had not previously revealed ever making such purchases.
