- the Biden administration announced it would prohibit mining in more than 200,000 acres of land from being mined for waterway protection, effectively canceling a major Minnesota mining project. But just one week prior, the administration agreed to a memorandum of understanding with Zambia and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, two countries known for mining rare metals cobalt and copper and using child labor to mine these metals.
- The Memorandum of Understanding was signed to strengthen electric vehicle batteries, according to a State department press release. The adminstration has been pushing for electric vehicles to replace traditional gas ones.
- The DRC produces over 70% of the world’s cobalt, and Zambia is the world’s sixth-largest copper producer, according to the department press release. These metals are vital in making electric vehicle batteries as well as other devices like cellphones.
- But the mines producing the metals for these electric vehicle batteries are run largely by child labor, according to the Department of Labor. In Congo, “Thousands of children also work in cobalt and copper mines in the southern Copperbelt region,” the department says.
- “Prevalence of child labor is highest in the country’s artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) sector, which operates with minimal oversight. Child labor has been detected at one in four ASM sites, with informal or illegal ASM operations leaving children uniquely exposed to hazardous working conditions and, in some instances, to forced labor.”
- The department also notes that, while the exact numbers are unknown, between 5,000 and 35,000 children work in artisanal cobalt mines.

Ryan Erik King at Jalopnik reports that “a recent report from the Anderson Economic Group (AEG) found that fueling costs from mid-priced ICE-powered vehicles are lower than similarly priced electric vehicles. Combustion drivers pay about $11.29 per 100 miles on the road. EV drivers who charge up at home spend about $11.60 per 100 miles.”
It gets even more delicious when you take into account those commercial chargers that pop up in a lot of places.
“The price difference is more dramatic for those who mainly recharge at stations,” King writes. “Frequent charging station users pay $14.40 per 100 miles.”
- That’s strike three for electrical vehicles. Not only are they significantly more expensive than gas-powered cars, they are less green, dirtier and more exploitative of labor than gas-powered cars, the latter of which are usually made by “good union labor.”
- Now we learn that EVs are pricier to fill up, too, sealing their reputation as a rich-man’s plaything. Three strikes indeed.

- Food Stamp costs have literally exploded from $60.3 billion in 2019, the last year before the pandemic, to the record-setting $119.5 billion in 2022.
- In 2019, the average monthly per person benefit was $129.83 in 2019, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. That increased by 78 percent to $230.88 in 2022.
Even more intriguing is the fact that the number of participants had increased from 35.7 million in 2019 to 41.2 million in 2022…

25 States Sue Biden Admin Over Rule Allowing 401(k) Managers To Put Savings Into ESG Funds
- A coalition of 25 states is suing the Biden administration over a Department of Labor (DOL) rule that affects millions of retirement accounts, the attorneys general of multiple states involved in the lawsuit announced on Wednesday.
- The new rule set to take effect on Jan. 30 allows 401(k) managers to invest clients’ money in environmental, social, and governance (ESG) funds, a move that 25 states argue violates the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974 (ERISA).
- According to the lawsuit, the rule puts at risk the retirement savings accounts of 152 million workers, or two-thirds of the U.S. population, totaling $12 trillion in assets, in the name of promoting the Biden administration’s climate agenda.
- The 25 states argue in the lawsuit that the Supreme Court concluded that ERISA requires fund managers to put the financial benefits of investments first and not any nonpecuniary benefits. The lawsuit also contends that the high court directly tied the term “benefits” to “income” and doesn’t cover nonpecuniary benefits.
- ESG Investment Strategies ‘Impose a Leftist Social and Economic Agenda’
- Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita said ESG investment strategies are not designed to maximize financial returns for clients.
- “Rather, they have been concocted entirely to impose a leftist social and economic agenda that cannot otherwise be implemented through the ballot box,” he said in a statement on Wednesday.
- ESG funds generally invest in companies that oppose fossil fuels, support unionization, and stress gender and racial diversity over merit, even if it results in a lower return for the client. ERISA is in place to safeguard American workers’ retirement savings and ensure that fund managers make investments with the highest potential return for their clients.

Federal Reserve rejects crypto bank’s application to join Fed system
- The Federal Reserve rejected Wyoming-based crypto bank Custodia’s application to become a member of the Fed’s system, noting the bank’s focus on crypto created significant safety and soundness risks and therefore didn’t meet requirements under the law.
- The Fed’s decision comes over two years after Custodia applied to become a member.
- Custodia, formerly known as Avanti, operates using a special state license from Wyoming for banks dealing with crypto. Custodia sued the Kansas City Federal Reserve Bank for delaying a decision to grant it a master account at the Fed, arguing that a master account decision should ordinarily take five to seven business days.
- When asked about granting master accounts for crypto firms at his confirmation hearing last January, Fed Chair Jay Powell indicated that once the central bank granted one application it would open a can of worms.
- “When we start granting them there will be a couple hundred of them quickly and we have to think about the broader safety and soundness implications and it’s just hugely precedential,” Powell said.
- In its statement on Friday, the Fed said it, “also found that Custodia’s risk management framework was insufficient to address concerns regarding the heightened risks associated with its proposed crypto activities, including its ability to mitigate money laundering and terrorism financing risks.”
