High Casualty Russian Attack On Ukraine As NATO Chief In Washington

• Just as NATO secretary general Mark Rutte is in Washington and is set to meet with President Trump Wednesday afternoon, Russia has launched another major overnight drone and missile attack which resulted in a high amount of civilian casualties.
• Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky said in a post on X that the attack killed at least seven civilians, including children, and that 17 were confirmed injured. “There were fires in Zaporizhzhia and hits on homes in Kyiv. The Kyiv, Odesa, Chernihiv, Dnipro, Kirovohrad, Poltava, Vinnytsia, Zaporizhzhia, Cherkasy and Sumy regions were under attack,” he wrote.

• The refinery in Hungary at Százhalombatta refines Russian oil. It erupted in flames on Monday night. “The fire broke out on Monday night at the Dunai Refinery’s AV3 unit. It was swiftly contained, and firefighters have remained on site since, MOL stated in a press release issued last night.” […] “According to information obtained by index.hu from industry insiders, the entire oil refinery faces the possibility of a complete shutdown. What ties all this together is timing. Across intelligence circles, the working window for a potential Russia/NATO test is roughly 2027–2032 the period when Russia could rebuild capacity lost in Ukraine and Europe must prove it can defend itself without guaranteed U.S. intervention. That’s why European leaders are hardening everything from energy grids to hospitals right now.
• At a deeper level, this is about economic realism. Europe knows it can’t outproduce the U.S. or China militarily, but it can out organize through integration by pooling procurement, infrastructure, and industrial capacity. The shift from buy peace with trade to sustain peace through preparedness is Europe’s late awakening. After 30 years of de-industrialization and complacency, they’re rediscovering that resilience is a military asset as well as a societal one. This is a continental reset of expectations.
