Alleged foreign agent law violations loom over Hunter Biden as House prepares to depose him
- The U.S. law firm that did work for Ukrainian energy company Burisma Holdings was encouraged by the Justice Department to register as a foreign agent for the same type of work that Hunter Biden did for the company while he was a board member. Burisma was not registered as a foreign agent at the time.
- Cravath, Swaine & Moore LLP (Cravath) as part of its representation of Burisma and its founder, litigation partner John Buretta met with State Department officials and sent a letter directly to the U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine, according to Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA) filings submitted earlier this month.
- Evidence from Hunter Biden’s laptop shows that he, too, met with State Department officials at the time when Burisma was under the most pressure from a Ukrainian government investigation led by Prosecutor General Viktor Shokin, raising questions about whether or not Hunter Biden’s activities fell under the scope of the act.
- The filings detail the acts which fall under regulation by FARA, including meetings with government officials. One filing showed that Buretta had three meetings with U.S. State Department and DOJ officials and sent a letter to then-U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine, Marie Yovanovitch.

- New York City Democrat Mayor Eric Adams is considering the idea of setting a curfew for illegal aliens in state-run housing after rising crime and worrisome safety issues exploded around migrant shelters, setting legal residents on edge.
- If this latest trial balloon becomes city-wide policy, illegal border crossers in state shelters would be required to be in their rooms by 11 p.m. each evening, They will also be required to stay in their rooms until 6 a.m. barring emergency situations.

Kim Jong-un: North Korea No Longer Pursuing Reconciliation with ‘Primary Foe’ South Korea
- North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un on Monday called for the national constitution to be rewritten so that South Korea is named as the “primary foe and invariable principal enemy,” a significant change from past rhetoric that called for reunification with the South.
- Kim also abolished several agencies on Monday that were concerned with South Korea relations.
- Kim told his rubber-stamp parliament, the Supreme People’s Assembly, that reunification with South Korea has become impossible. He said the South Koreans have become obsessed with undermining his regime and seizing control over the northern half of the peninsula.
- Kim demeaned the South Koreans as merely “top-class stooges” of the United States and other foreign powers. He said South Koreans should no longer be described as estranged “countrymen” of North Koreans, and all lines of communication between the two countries should be severed. He effectively ordered the very concept of “reunification” to be stricken from North Korea’s national history.

- In a 68-page Wednesday filing in the Florida case concerning his handling of concealed documents, Trump’s legal team claimed they obtained heavily redacted documents through a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request revealing “politically motivated operatives in the Biden Administration and the National Archives and Records Administration” (NARA) have been involved in pushing the classified documents probe since 2021. Assassination attempts are on the rise worldwide — is the US next?
- Barely one day passed in 2024 before another reminder was issued of one of the most serious developments in national security and terrorism — the increasing prevalence of political assassinations around the world.
- In South Korea, Lee Jae-myung, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, was stabbed in the neck on Jan. 2, by an assailant seemingly motivated by a corruption scandal surrounding Lee. The leader survived the attack.
- The attempt was just the latest in a long — and growing — line of assassination attempts against political leaders.
- In August 2023, Ecuadorian presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio was assassinated in Quito by Colombian hitmen. In September of the previous year, a man sporting Nazi tattoos attempted to assassinate Argentine vice president Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, only for his gun to jam. That June, former Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe was killed by a lone gunman with a homemade firearm, apparently for the leader’s ties with the Unification Church.
- The United States has avoided a successful high-profile assassination during the recent escalation in domestic political violence, but not for the lack of trying. In 2022 alone, serious plots targeted Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and conservative Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh. In both cases, the would-be assassins made it all the way to their target’s home. Of note, these incidents underscore that assassination threats are not reserved by any one political ideology — they are weaponized by extremists of all stripes. Public service in the United States today often features a deluge of threats as an occupational hazard.
