The Manufacturing Slowdown Is No Manufactured Problem
- The manufacturing sector is a much smaller portion of the American economy today than yesteryear, but it is still a leading indicator to the service sector, and therefore the broader economy. When it comes to timing a recession, manufacturing has proven to be a reliable gauge – at least for those still willing to pay attention to it.
- The New York, Philly, Dallas, and Richmond banks all have similar methodologies in their surveys, so it’s easy to compare results across regions.
- Each of these four banks has a monthly manufacturing index, derived from a matrix of inputs, designed to measure the health or activity level of the sector. The survey results are primarily a comparison of the number of respondents indicating a positive outcome versus a negative outcome.
- Starting in the spring and by early summer of 2022, each manufacturing index went negative, meaning a contraction in the sector. The rate of decline has varied with Texas getting hit hard and fast while the Philly district took longer to see the fastest declines. The Richmond district never saw the fast contractions in the other three areas, but also never saw the same peak in growth. The Empire State has swung wildly between slight expansions and steep contractions, but overall has been shrinking markedly since the beginning of last year.
- The average of the four banks shows the same pattern, bottoming in May of this year and crawling their way back up since then. Yet the recent increases in the indices are not indicative of growth, but merely a slower rate of decline. While the Richmond district’s latest value is positive and both the Philly district and Texas recently had positive values, these data points are unlikely to continue into trends.
- the regional Fed banks are telling us is that the broader economy will follow manufacturing into contraction within the next six months. Additionally, manufacturing is poised to decline further, albeit at a slower pace. The underlying data for all six indices point to further deterioration, just not as fast as the freefall seen in late Spring or early Summer of last year when each index bottomed out. The difference going forward will be that metrics like employment fall faster than production, the opposite of what we’ve seen thus far.
- Here’s where things get hazy because they’re dependent on events that haven’t happened yet. If the appropriations fight in Congress results in considerably lower spending, we might avert a steep downturn, and a recession will be short and mild. That seems unlikely if history is any indication, which means the spending will continue out of Washington, and the coming recession has the potential to not only outlast the Great Recession but outdo it in magnitude as well

CNBC: Biden Missed Chance to Refill SPR at Lower Rates After Draining It for Political Reasons

- On Friday’s broadcast of CNBC’s “Squawk Box,” co-hosts Becky Quick and Joe Kernen reacted to news that the Biden administration wants to try to refill the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) at a price of $79 a barrel or less by noting that there was a time when the SPR could have been refilled at a lower price, but we didn’t and the reserve is low because it was drained “to help stem an inconvenient price rise for an administration.”

Bidenomics: U.S. Budget Deficit Explodes 23% Higher to $1.7 Trillion
- The U.S. budget deficit increased 23 percent to $1.7 trillion, an increase of $320 billion, in the year after the Biden administration pushed through the Inflation Reduction Act which it claimed would close the government’s funding gap.
- The explosive growth in the deficit came as revenue fell $457 billion from a year ago and expenses decreased by just $137 billion. Total spending for the year came in at $6.134 trillion.
- Spending would have been higher if the Supreme Court had not declared Biden’s student loan forgiveness program illegal.
- The deficit adds to the U.S. debt total, which the government said earlier this week had reached $33.6 trillion. That is more than $250,000 per household and more than $99,000 per person in the U.S. The Pete G. Peterson Foundation has calculated that if every household in the U.S. contributed $1,000 a month to debt reduction, it would take 21 years to pay down the debt.

- De-dollarization continues accelerating with news of the Shanghai Petroleum and Natural Gas Exchange (SHPGX), a Chinese-backed exchange for trading energy-related products, settling its first cross-border transaction in digital yuan.
- Chinese-based financial news outlet “Yicai” first reported PetroChina International bought one million barrels of crude oil using digital yuan on Thursday. It was the exchange’s first overseas oil settlement in digital yuan. However, the name of the seller was not disclosed.
- It remains to be seen who exactly PetroChina paid digital yuan for the crude oil, but it might not be out of the question that it was Russia, considering it’s been shut out of the SWIFT system, plus oil exports to China have hit a record high.

According to bankruptcy court documents, James Biden received these loans “based upon representations that his last name, ‘Biden,’ could ‘open doors’ and that he could obtain a large investment from the Middle East based on his political connections.”
- On March 1, 2018, Americore wired a $200,000 loan into James and Sara Biden’s personal bank account — not their business bank account. And then on the very same day, James Biden wrote a $200,000 check from this same personal bank account to Joe Biden.
- James Biden wrote this check to Joe Biden as a “loan repayment.” Americore — a distressed company — loaned money to James Biden who then sent it to Joe Biden. Even if this was a personal loan repayment, it’s still troubling that Joe Biden’s ability to be paid back by his brother depended on the success of his family’s shady financial dealings.
- Comer will now investigate if Joe Biden has a loan document proving he lent money to his brother and if the president had similar arrangements with other family members.

- On August 8, 2017, $5 million was wired from a CEFC-affiliated investment vehicle (Northern International) to the bank account for Hudson West III, which spent the next year transferring $4,790,375 million directly to Hunter Biden’s firm, Owasco, according to a Senate report reviewed by this reporter.

- Judicial Watch, has released new records that reveal Barack Obama’s presence at the emergency scene following the tragic drowning of his family’s personal chef, Tafari Campbell.
- The records, obtained from the Massachusetts State Police, indicate that Obama arrived at the emergency response scene via motorcade.
- Tafari Campbell, 45, met his tragic end while paddle boarding on Great Edgartown Pond, Martha’s Vineyard, on July 23 with an unnamed female staffer of the Obama family.
- A female made the initial 911 call, who, as of 8:18 pm, was actively searching for Campbell on a boat.
- Oddly, the call log shows the reason for this call as BLANK – an inconsistency, considering that all other calls made that night had their reasons clearly mentioned.
- Adding to the mystery, the call’s origin was marked as Wilson’s Landing, a popular paddle board launch site roughly two miles from the Obama residence on Turkeyland Cove. This information contradicts the Massachusetts State Police records, stating that the first call originated from the Obamas’ residence.

- The female witness, who was visibly emotional and wet, also arrived at the scene. She was later interviewed the next morning in the Obama residence, with Barack Obama present.
- The documents also reveal the existence of a Secret Service video that shows Campbell and his paddleboarding companion entering the water. The video also captures the Secret Service’s immediate emergency response following Campbell’s drowning.

U.S. District Judge Roger Benitez, of San Diego, found no equivalent in early American history and ruled that the ban was therefore unconstitutional.
- The judge further ruled that the semiautomatic rifle – known in the industry as “modern sporting rifles” – such as the AR-15 are common household items used for self-defense by millions of law-abiding citizens, who should not have their Second Amendment rights abridged by a state – even as the firearms have been misused by others in crimes including mass shootings.

- European Union, Canada and the U.S. condemned the communist China after Chinese vessels collided with Philippine boats on a resupply mission to BRP Sierra Madre, a Philippine navy ship, on Second Thomas Shoal.
- Ayungin Shoal, also known as Second Thomas Shoal, is an atoll in the Spratly Islands of the South China Sea, 105 nautical miles west of Palawan, Philippines. Claimed by several nations but located in the exclusive economic zone of the Philippines, the atoll is currently militarily occupied by the Philippines.
- The incident occurred on Sunday, when the China Coast Guard vessel 5203 (CCGV 5203) engaged in dangerous blocking maneuvers, leading to a collision with the Philippine indigenous resupply boat named Unaiza May 2 (UM2).
- Furthermore, during the same resupply mission, the Philippine Coast Guard vessel MRRV 4409 was bumped by the Chinese Maritime Militia vessel 00003 (CMMV 00003) while positioned approximately 6.4NM Northeast of Ayungin Shoal.
- Up to six Chinese warships have been deployed to the Middle East over the past week, South China Morning Post reported.
- The 44th Naval Escort Task Force has been engaged in standard operations in the region since May, partaking in a multi-day visit to Oman last week, which included a joint naval exercise with the Omani Navy, as per statements from the Chinese defense ministry.
- On Saturday, after their visit, the task force departed from the capital, Muscat on October 14, heading towards an undisclosed destination, as per state media.
- Hailing from the People’s Liberation Army Eastern Theatre, the task force is composed of the Zibo, a Type 052D guided-missile destroyer, the frigate Jingzhou, and the integrated supply ship Qiandaohu.

- Earlier today, a team led by NNSA conducted a subsurface chemical explosion at the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS) to improve the United States’ ability to detect low-yield nuclear explosions around the world.“These experiments advance our efforts to develop new technology in support of U.S. nuclear nonproliferation goals,” said Corey Hinderstein, NNSA’s Deputy Administrator for Defense Nuclear Nonproliferation. “They will help reduce global nuclear threats by improving the detection of underground nuclear explosive tests.”
- The experiment will help validate new predictive explosion models and detection algorithms. Measurements were collected using accelerometers, seismometers, infrasound sensors, electromagnetic sensors, chemical and radiotracer samplers, and meteorological sensors.

New York Civil Fraud Case Judge Fines Trump $5,000 For Violating Gag Order
- The New York judge overseeing former President Donald Trump’s civil fraud case fined him $5,000 for violating the court’s gag order, according to a filing.
- Judge Arthur Engoron threatened jail time during a hearing Friday morning after he discovered Trump had left up a post about his law clerk, Allison Greenfield, on his campaign website for 17 days after a gag order was issued. The post, which referenced Greenfield as Democratic Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer’s “girlfriend” and included a photo of the two individuals, prompted Egoron to issue the gag order blocking the former president from posting about court staff on Oct. 3.
- “Make no mistake: future violations, whether intentional or unintentional, will subject the violator to far more severe sanctions, which may include, but are not limited to, steeper financial penalties, holding Donald Trump in contempt of court, and possibly imprisoning him pursuant to New York Judiciary Law § 753,” the judge continued.
