Gas prices hit nine-month high on rising oil prices
- U.S. gas prices climbed to their highest point in nine months on Wednesday, driven by rising oil prices that show no signs of easing in the months ahead.
- The national average stood at $3.80 per gallon on Wednesday, according to AAA, well below the prices seen last summer, which saw a record-high national average of more than $5 per gallon but still a 27-cent increase from last month.
- The increase is due largely to higher oil prices, which have climbed on the backs of production cuts from OPEC+ members, including Saudi Arabia, which announced it would extend its voluntary cut of 1 million barrels per day through September. Russia also took some supply off the market, reducing global output by 1.5%.

Georgia Voting Official Makes Excuses For Residents Who Illegally Voted in 2020
- As the Georgia secretary of state’s office continues to investigate evidence that indicates more than 10,300 Georgians may have illegally voted in the November 2020 election, on Friday the office’s chief operating officer reportedly defended voters for violating state election law.
- “The reality is these are normal, everyday Georgians who are just trying to exercise their right to vote in a very weird year,” Chief Operating Officer Gabriel Sterling reportedly told Atlanta’s WSB-TV, when confronted with an admission from one voter that he had moved more than 30 days before the general election but cast his vote in the county in which he no longer lived.
- At the time of Trump’s election challenge, in alleging widespread violations of Section 21-2-218, the president relied on information from the Secretary of State’s Office and the U.S. Postal Service National Change of Address (NCOA) database, the latter of which identified more than 100,000 individuals who had indicated a move to a new county before October 1, 2020.
- Mark Davis, an expert on residency issues and voter data analytics, compared the NCOA data to official data from the Secretary of State’s Office and determined that approximately 35,000 of those Georgians cast a ballot in the county from which they had moved more than 30 days before the election. While a percentage of those voters may have moved only temporarily, perhaps because they were students or in the military—circumstances that do not affect a voter’s residency—with less than 12,000 votes separating Biden and Trump, this bucket of potentially illegal votes could have resulted in a state court tossing the election results.
- Nonetheless, because Georgia courts delayed Trump’s election-challenge case, setting a trial on the matter only after Congress’ certification of Biden as the victor, evidence of illegal voting was never heard.

Judge Rules That Donald Trump Has ‘Presidential Immunity’ on False Election Claims
- A judge in Pennsylvania determined that former President Trump cannot be sued by an election official over statements he made casting suspicion on the 2020 election results during his presidency, due to the protection provided by presidential immunity.
- Judge Michael Erdos of Philadelphia County Court of Common Pleas ruled that Trump’s immunity extends to a tweet he posted and statements he made during a Pennsylvania state Senate committee hearing in November 2020, which alleged fraudulent activity in the state’s election counting process, even though these claims were not backed by evidence.
- Erdos ruled that Trump’s initial statements fell within his official duties as he was communicating to the public on matters of public interest.
- “Here, then-President Trump’s Gettysburg remarks and his tweet were public,” Erdos wrote. “Moreover, the topic of these statements—claims from third parties and the President himself about irregularities in the Presidential election which on their face called into question the integrity of the election and whether now-President Joseph Biden had been duly elected—was undoubtedly a matter of great public concern.”
- Special Counsel Jack Smith has indicted former President Donald Trump for his constitutionally protected speech and election challenges ahead of the events leading to the Capitol riot on Jan. 6, 2021.
- Constitutional attorney Jonathan Turley shredded the indictment in a reaction to the announcement.
- “The hatred for Trump is so all-encompassing that legal experts on the political left have ignored the chilling implications of this indictment,” Turley wrote. “This complaint is based largely on statements that are protected under the First Amendment. It would eviscerate free speech and could allow the government to arrest those who are accused of spreading disinformation in elections.”
- Turley then cast doubt that an indictment of Trump could ultimately stand up to judicial scrutiny at the Supreme Court level, while citing the 2012 case United States v. Alvarez that ruled a politician could not be convicted for lying in a ‘stolen valor’ case.
- “That precedent did not deter Smith. This indictment is reminiscent of the case against former Virginia Gov. Sources: US decides cyber attack can be ‘act of war’
