“Faithful” – A Piano Instrumental Interlude by Fred McKinnon

Today’s improvisational interlude is based around a constant droning of a tonic pad. The “Tonic Pad” is simply a sustained hold of the root and fifth notes of the key. In this song, I’m in the key of C Major, so the tonic pad is holding a C and G note. All of the melodies and chords that flow underneath this sustained pad are part of the key, and these two notes are shared tones. In music theory, we call that “common tones”.

I wanted to provide a piece that was simple, constant, and had enough space for the listener to just relax and soak in the feel of the piece. I chose the word “Faithful” because it reminds me of God. He is always faithful. Just as the sun rises in the morning and sets in the evening, just as these common tones sustain and suspend throughout the entire piece – all of that is constant and faithful.

I hope that you enjoy the music.
