Black Lives Matter has grown from an idea in New York to a worldwide movement. Founded in 2013, the Black Lives Matter movement has recently touched billions of people following the death of George Floyd just over a month ago. Demonstrations have been taking place all across the world and many statues and other monuments celebrating colonial past and its associated racist history have begun to be removed. But what does this mean for black trans people?
Black trans people are disproportionally affected by violence – both assault and murder. Violence for being black, for being different or for being trans. Ianne Fields Stewart is a black non binary transfeminine New York based storyteller working at the intersection of theatre and activism. Ianne created The Okra Project  in 2018 – a collective that seeks to address the global crisis faced by black trans people by bringing home cooked, healthy, and culturally specific meals and resources wherever they can reach them. The Okra Project project is making a real difference.
