Noah Crampton, The Startup Coach

The Startup Coach

Welcome to Who are the startups, podcast shorts featuring founder interviews of Canadian startups. Welcome back to who are the startups I am the startup coach, founder of TorontoStarts and with me today is Noah cramped and CEO of Mutuo Health Solutions and makers of auto scribe. Welcome, Noah.

Noah Crampton

Thank you.

The Startup Coach

So what does Mutuo Health Solutions do?

Noah Crampton

We have a product called Autoscribe, which is an AI based scribe technology for doctors. So you can imagine you’re at your doctor’s office, and there’s a microphone in the exam room attached to the computer in the exam room. And as the doctor is asking the patient questions, it listens to the conversation, and in real time generates a note that the doctor would normally type themselves. So it saves the doctor like up to 50% of their time on note taking, who is Mutuo Health Solutions for that just for doctors is for dentists, all health care. The nice thing about our technology is that the AI is very flexible. We built a lot of different note templates for any kind of health care provider. Right now we’re targeting, you know, the standard physicians in the community, whether they be family physicians or specialists, but any any healthcare provider can use it.

The Startup Coach

What is your startup story and what drives you?

Noah Crampton

I’m a family physician, myself, and I wanted to solve my own problem. And we knew that AI was coming up with amazing solutions to problems. And one of them that I was passionate about was how much time doctors spent doing administrative tasks that are causing a burnout crisis in health care, doctors are leaving the profession because there’s just so much paperwork that’s being dumped on them. So I started researching this area about five years ago, and I collaborated with the computer scientists from the University of Toronto, and we started to prototype how to generate this AI scribe tool, and we got really good performance. And so during the pandemic, we refined the prototype into you know, alpha, beta, and did all the privacy, security and legal stuff required and healthcare and we’ve been in the market for the last four months with, we’re now up to 10 users of our product,

The Startup Coach

and how do you define success.

Noah Crampton

So I’m here to make a big impact in healthcare, you know, certainly want to see traction with the tool, making sure that it provides value to clinicians. And my hope is that at a system level in the in the healthcare system, that auto scribe will be perceived as partly solving the burnout crisis in health care by liberating 50% of doctors time on administrative tasks for them to either, you know, see more patients if they want to increase volume and get compensated more or free up their time to spend more personal time with their families and friends so that they can have wellness and be recharged for the day with with patients. So I would define success as you know, getting to a critical mass in the market with with that solution, passionate about solving that in North America. So ideally get to a target market size, penetration of of 10% of the market.

The Startup Coach

What is the business model?

Noah Crampton

Were software as a service model business to business, basically, we sell to clinics and individual doctors, depending on who the Signing Authority is for procuring Information Technology Solutions at their organization. You know, right now, we’re on a recurring revenue model with incentives to try the product and a free trial for one month because we think the product provides so much value immediately, once it’s in someone’s workflow, that that we think we’re able to capture a lot of interest and retain those clients once once they see the value.

The Startup Coach

You are currently in the next AI program. Can you tell us about your experience with next AI.

Noah Crampton

It’s been a wonderful experience. So far. Next AI is a founders accelerator kind of program. So they provide mentorship for improving business skills and understanding as well as the technical side for AI development. So me and my two co founders who are on the technical side have been partaking in the mentorship that has both, you know, sort of classroom base, but also from the resources and advisors and experts they have access to to provide a sounding board on where our company is and what sort of strategies might be of use. So it’s still early days in the program just kicked off just about a couple of months ago. But we’re fortunate to have gotten through the first gate and we’ll be presenting our our company may 4 And fifth that venture reveal day. And hopefully we’ll be assigned to even more, you know, strategically aligned mentors to help get our product into the market even more.

The Startup Coach

As an AI founder, what is your reaction to the current call for a pause on AI development and the general fear around it?

Noah Crampton

Yeah, it’s it’s a really interesting question, because there’s been just this explosion of performance with the new large language models. Obviously, many people are familiar With chatGBT and the immediate feedback that is sort of relevant to human understanding that that technology is now providing for any language based application. And it’s become so complex in terms of what areas this can be deployed in, it can be in really any area of society of business, the economy, in terms of improving the tasks and automating the tasks that typically were done by often, you know, white collar professionals that it’s a bit concerning, because that can also be used by people with not good driving forces behind them, if they have are Maleficent. And they can automate some of the codes for hacking. And there’s just, it opens up Pandora’s Box of the applications that the new powerful technologies can enable. So right now, you can’t really put the cat back in the bag. So you really have to accept that this is out there. But what really should be happening rather than a pause is urgent assessments by government authorities about the proper appropriate regulation above the field to understand what is legal, what is ethical, what is towards the benefit of society, rather than just allow it to run free in a wild west sort of way. Because if we leave it that way, then unfortunately, that’s gonna lead to chaos.
