His birth parents, Julius and Ethel Rosenberg, were political prisoners executed by the state, and his adoptive parents, Abel and Anne Meeropol, were progressive songwriters, with Abel authoring Billie Holiday's classic anti-lynching ballad "Strange Fruit."
