Show Notes | October 14, 2020 | Episode 81

For those who are hurting for money and need to find their next job ASAP, rushing into the first opportunity that comes along could hurt you. That's what happened to Ryleigh Sims when she took the first job that fell in her lap.Ryleigh was treated like a number or someone the management could talk down to. She was told she could be replaced at anytime. Eventually, Ryleigh had to say enough is enough, and she was followed by more than a dozen other team members. The few times Ryleigh had to walk away from a job were scary. At times, she went up to three months without one, but it ultimately changed the company for the better and Ryleigh ultimately found a better job. There are plenty of jobs out there. You have to be able to find one that works for you. Don't let money hold you down. There is money elsewhere. You just have to find it. There is no reason for you to go to work everyday miserable. Employers need to understand that keeping employees happy will result in better retention. If you make them miserable, they might just walk.

Applicants have to find something that works for them, for their family and for their lifestyle.

Through the experience Ryleigh had at her previous job, she learned a valuable lesson. As she was reading job descriptions, she tried to mold herself each time into the perfect applicant. In actuality, there is no such thing. VirtForce helped Ryleigh realize, she needed to break the mold and just be herself. Instead of trying to be something she wasn't, Ryleigh said enough is enough. I'm tired of being something they want me to be. I'm going to be me for a change. When VirtForce posted an opportunity with Sutherland on its job board, Ryleigh thought back on a time she applied with them years earlier, and did not get the job. Regardless, she decided to apply. A few days later, she received an email from Indeed about Sutherland conducting virtual interviews.  She participated in a virtual interview, making an effort to just be herself, which she admits at times is quirky, and it paid off. Ryleigh impressed the hiring manager enough that she got #hired as a full-time customer support representative.  Sutherland treats her like a person. They check up on her and sincerely ask how she is doing. They treat her like a human being - not a number. Graduating in May, the job with Sutherland was an opportunity for Ryleigh to get her foot in the door, so she has the potential to climb the career ladder when she and her husband move to California next year. Ryleigh's ultimate goal at Sutherland is to get to a position where she can move around with her husband in the US Navy and not be affected by state laws that may be prohibitive to remote work.   Juggling college and a full-time job is going to be a balance for Ryleigh, but she wanted a full-time position for the paid time off and benefits she wasn't getting in a part-time role. Ryleigh encourages current applicants looking for remote work to not give up and take opportunities that are unpaid or underpaid to build experience.Last year, she had an internship that gave her the confidence and the courage to go after the position she has now. Ryleigh knew she had to take the time to find a position that was perfect for her. She encourages others to never settle for less. Tune in to hear how Ryleigh's position as a customer support representative could transition into an opportunity she's passionate about - IT.If you are a new listener to VirtForce podcast, we would love to hear from you.
