​To help listeners understand what follows in podcast #3 of "Voice from an Urn", the third part of my trilogy on my own true story of incest, let me fill you in a little on the years between my leaving my father's home, up until my mother came to live with us.
My father used those years to poison my mother's mind against me. History speaks of "a woman scorned" but that term applies to men as much as it does to women. As far as my father was concerned, by choosing to marry John, I had scorned him. To regain the power and control he had lost over his life by losing me, he tightened up his control of my mother's mind. By the time he died 30 years later in the year 2000, he'd convinced my mother that John and I would never look after her as he had, and our only interest in her, since I was an only child, was the money she would leave us when she died. Torn between what he had drummed into her head and the natural love of a mother for her child, while she lived with us for most of the next 5 years, she vacillated between trust and wariness.
 In the second last year of her life, where Chapter 1 of "Voice from an Urn" begins, my mother began undergoing chemotherapy treatments for a very large tumor on her left lung. As the story opens, she now lives with us in our home. In the process of looking after her recovery, for the first time, we really start to talk to each other about what has kept us from knowing, and truly loving each other for over 35 years. It is now time for my mother to speak and share her side of this story with us.
