Episode 126 — Nimona

July 13, 2015

This week on View from the Gutters our topic work is Nimona, by Noelle Stevenson. Originally created as Stevenson's art school thesis, the graphic novel ran first as a webcomic and was released in print in 2015. It has been optioned for a animated feature film.

The comic is an all-ages story, and has a light, fun style with frequent humor—as well as more serious elements. It combines elements of science fiction and fantasy, in a medieval kingdom of knights and magic which also contains cell phones, TV news, zombie movies, and more.

It features Lord Blackheart, the evilest knight of the kingdom battling Sir Goldenloin, his former best friend (and possible lover). But not all is quite as it seems, nor are the lines of good and evil so clear cut. Into this conflict enters Nimona, a young girl with the power to shapeshift into any living creature, who offers herself to Lord Blackheart as his loyal henchwoman. Not all is quite as it seems with her, either.

In our recommendation section our hosts nominated Daredevil: Born Again, Lumberjanes Vol. 1, Little Nemo: Return to Slumberland, Red One, and Glory for discussion on our next episode, and our selected title is Lumberjanes, Vol. 1 (which coincidentally has won Eisner awards for Best New Series and Best Publication for Teens).

You still have 1 more week to pre-order a View from the Gutters T-Shirt if you would like one.

Our hosts for this episode are Andrew Chard, Tobiah Panshin, Kayleigh Fleeman, and Cade Reynolds.
