Episode 81 — Queen and Country, Vol. 1

August 27, 2014

This week on View from the Gutters our topic work is Queen and Country, Vol. 1: Operation Broken Ground, by Greg Rucka with art by Steve Rolston. Queen and Country is a modern espionage/thriller inspired by British TV series such as The Sandbaggers.

It primarily follows the missions of Tara Chace, as well as her co-workers in an MI-6 Special Intelligence Services group generally referred to as “The Minders.” In this first storyline we see Tara assassinate a former soviet general turned black market arms dealer, and the series of repercussions that result from that act.

Queen and Country is hands down one of the greatest examples of its genre, both in its comic book form and novels which expand Tara’s story. If you wish to read the rest of the series, this is the recommended reading order mentioned on the episode:

Queen and Country, Vol. 1-4

Queen and Country: Declassified, Vol. 1

Queen and Country, Vol. 5 & 6

Queen and Country: Declassified, Vol. 2

Queen and Country, Vol. 7

A Gentleman’s Game (Novel)

Queen and Country, Vol. 8

Private Wars (Novel)

The Last Run (Novel)

In our recommendation section our hosts nominated Prince of Cats, Parker: The Hunter, Northlanders, and The Fuse for discussion on the next episode, and our selected title is The Fuse, Vol. 1.

We invite you to discuss both this episode and its topic on our subreddit.

Our hosts for this episode are Andrew Chard, Tobiah Panshin, Brant Gillihan-Eddy, and Cade Reynolds.
