This week on View from the Gutters our topic work is Persepolis, by Marjane Satrapi. It is an autobiographical comic, relating Satrapi’s experiences growing up in Iran during and after the Islamic revolution of the 1970s. It follows her experiences first as a schoolgirl during the revolution, then later as a teenager when she is sent away to Europe in order to escape the Iran/Iraq war of the 1980s, and finally her return as an adult to her homeland.

It is a deeply moving and earnest story told in a conversational style which is accessible to both experienced and novice comic readers. Originally published in French from 2000 to 2003, Persepolis has received wide critical acclaim—including several awards—and been translated into numerous languages. An animated film version has been produced as well.
