Episode 69 — Avengers Forever

May 28, 2014

This week on View from the Gutters our topic work is Avengers Forever, by Kurt Busiek with art by Carlos Pacheco and Jesus Merino. Released in 1998-1999, Avengers Forever was a 12-issue mini-series which saw a coalition of Avengers from across past, present, and future teaming up in a mammoth showdown between Kang the Conquerer—one of the Avengers’ greatest foes—and his own future self, the enigmatic Immortus, guardian of time.

It’s an incredibly interesting story, similar to Crisis on Infinite Earths in some ways, which revisits (and somewhat recons) large swathes of Avengers’ history, explaining many discrepancies and conundrums that had piled up over the years. It also features mammoth battles with hundreds of Avengers from across all times and dimensions, races across time, and an appearance by what would later be known as the Agents of Atlas.

In our recommendation section our hosts nominated Persepolis, V for Vendetta, and Finder, Vol. 1 & 2 for discussion on the next episode, and our selected title is Persepolis (available now as The Complete Persepolis, previously published as two volumes).

We invite you to discuss both this episode and it’s topic work on our new subreddit.

Our hosts for this episode were Joe Preti, Tobiah Panshin, Brant Eddy, and Cade Reynolds.
