Welcome Cathy!

Years ago Cathy Duffy authored the book, “Government Nannies” as a warning for parents to be aware of the encroachment of government into our children’s lives. This book was groundbreaking because it was written in 1995 and dealt with the US government’s Goals 2000 and outcome-based education. While goals are great, and its important to have them, what was in
2. This warning has morphed through the years from Outcome-based education, which sounds good on the surface, to mandatory sex education beginning in kindergarten and testing, which includes personal questions about family in some cases. Parents are barred from objecting to certain books or curricula that teach “gender-affirming.” Parents left traditional schools and even private in droves during COVID-19 when they realized what their children were taught. (comment on this).
3.  Here in Florida and other states, vouchers are used for education, which then can go to private Charter schools. This seems like a good option for some families. However, I had a sneak peek at the effectiveness of the science classes a few years in a row. I was asked to judge science fair projects for middle and high school schools. Only a handful of projects could be said to contain true science fair requirements, and there was a handful more the next year. That was after I gave a talk the following year on the proper way to do a science fair project and donated my book on the subject to each child and their library. Besides this lack of instruction, what I found appalling was the behavior of the students who were allowed to come and view the projects while judging took place. I won’t be going back in the future. (The point here is that, unfortunately, believing that Charter schools are better may not be the case in all circumstances.)

My concern is that charter schools will become the only option for homeschooled students in the near future.

Do you have anything else to share? Are you seeing new and innovative curriculum coming to the market (Top Picks, etc.)?
