The Paradox of Generous Giving

August 25, 2024

Pastor Jon Verwey

When I am weak, then I am strong. — 2 Corinthians 12:10

We are exalted when we are humble. — Matthew 23:12

To find your life you must lose it. — Matthew 16:2524 One person gives freely, yet gains even more; another withholds unduly, but comes to poverty. — Proverbs 11:24 (NIV)

9 They share freely and give generously to those in need. Their good deeds will be remembered forever…— Psalm 112:9a (NLT)

One person gives freely [to those in need], yet gains even more… — Proverbs 11:24 (NIV). Text in [ ] my addition.

6 Remember this—a farmer who plants only a few seeds will get a small crop. But the one who plants generously will get a generous crop. 7 You must each decide in your heart how much to give. And don’t give reluctantly or in response to pressure. “For God loves a person who gives cheerfully.” 8 And God will generously provide all you need. Then you will always have everything you need and plenty left over to share with others. 9 As the Scriptures say, “They share freely and give generously to the poor. Their good deeds will be remembered forever.” — 2 Corinthians 9:6–9 (NLT)

7 You must each decide in your heart how much to give. And don’t give reluctantly or in response to pressure. “For God loves a person who gives cheerfully.” — 2 Corinthians 9:7 (NLT)

Are you one who freely and cheerfully gives?

  • Does your giving affect your lifestyle?

  • Would your budget say you are a generous giver?

  • When you do give, do you have to coax your hand open to release the gift?

  • Do you love to see how God uses your giving to bless the lives of others?

  • Are you intentionally looking for ways to freely give?
