How to Live & Work in Ireland for a Year

March 18, 2025

Have you ever dreamed of living and working in Ireland? While moving overseas might seem like a daunting challenge, there’s an exciting opportunity that could make this dream a reality for young adults—the Working Holiday Authorization (WHA).

This program allows eligible U.S. citizens to live and work in Ireland for up to 12 months, creating an incredible chance to explore, gain work experience, and connect with Irish culture.

The Ireland Working Holiday Authorization

The WHA is a special agreement between Ireland and the United States that enables young Americans to work and live in Ireland for a year. The program is designed to reflect the deep cultural and historical ties between the two nations and to promote cross-cultural exchange.

To qualify, you must be:

  • A U.S. citizen over the age of 18.

  • Either a full-time post-secondary student (enrolled in a program leading to an associate’s, bachelor’s, master’s, or doctorate degree) or a recent graduate (within 12 months of graduation).

Unlike traditional work visas, there is no upper age limit, making this an excellent opportunity for those returning to education later in life.

How to Apply for the WHA

If you’re in the Midwest, you can apply through the Consulate General of Ireland in Chicago. For those outside this region, your local Irish consulate

will handle the process.

The required application materials include:

  • A completed application form (available online)

  • A photocopy of your passport

  • Passport photos

  • A resume

  • Proof of eligibility (such as a transcript or diploma)

  • A bank statement showing at least $1,500 in funds

  • Proof of health insurance for the duration of your stay

  • Payment of the application fee

Applications can be submitted via email, mail, or in person. Once approved, you’ll receive a Working Holiday Certificate, which you will present at immigration upon arrival in Ireland.

One of the best aspects of the WHA is the flexibility it offers. There are no restrictions on the types of jobs you can take, making it possible to gain valuable experience in various industries. Many participants find work in Ireland’s thriving hospitality and tourism sector, while others use the opportunity to gain professional experience in their field of study.

Employers in Ireland are familiar with this program and are often eager to hire WHA participants. Some applicants secure jobs before arriving, while others choose to find work once they settle in.

Practical Considerations

While the consulate facilitates the WHA process, it does not provide assistance with job placement or housing. However, they do share useful resources on where to look for jobs and accommodation.

Additionally, upon arrival in Ireland, WHA participants must register with immigration authorities to receive a residence card, ensuring their legal right to work and stay in the country for up to a year.

Why Consider the Working Holiday Authorization?

Whether you have Irish ancestry and want to reconnect with your roots, are seeking adventure before settling into a long-term career, or simply wish to experience living abroad, the WHA provides an incredible opportunity.

Many past participants have found this experience to be life-changing—immersing themselves in Ireland’s stunning landscapes, vibrant cities, and warm hospitality while gaining valuable professional and personal growth.
