The Union Edge

American Federation Of Government Employees District Report – Episode 4

September 25, 2017

This week on the AFGE District Report, we have Shane Fausey, President of AFGE Local 4047, and Don Williams, President of Voices of Joe, join us to talk about the dangers that workers in the federal prison system face. Don’s son was murdered in 2013 and wasn’t found until a half hour after the murder due to low staffing. In the prison that Shane works with most, there are 1400 inmates and 147 employees. The prison itself was designed for 890 inmates and is currently at 90% of what is called Mission Critical staffing levels, leaving just 29 guards at a time to guard 1400 inmates. This is not only incredibly dangerous for the guards, but also is a disservice to the inmates whom are far less likely to be rehabilitated due to the neglect.
