Later, we’ll have a conversation with a rugged veteran  forward from the South Carolina Stingrays, Trevor Gillies. Over the course of his 17-year professional career, Gillies has played in more than 600 games in the ECHL and AHL, 57 over parts of three seasons in the National Hockey League.
During the 2010-11 season with the New York Islanders, Gillies skated in 39 games, scoring two goals and adding 165 penalty minutes. That season, the 6-foot-3, 231-pound Gillies fought several NHL heavyweights including Shawn Thornton, Jared Boll, Paul Bissonnette and the late Derek Boogaard.
Gillies began his professional hockey career with the Mississippi Sea Wolves in 1999. He also spent time with former ECHL clubs in Greensboro, Augusta, Richmond and Peoria during his career. Most recently, Gillies appeared in five games for the Orlando Solar Bears during the 2013-14 campaign. He has skated in 122 career ECHL games.
We’ll chat about how he got into hockey, his first NHL call-up, mentoring players and the role of enforcers in today’s game.
