Can You Determine This Patient’s Most Likely Psychiatric Condition?

April 26, 2020

Welcome to the next episode of The Reveal where we take you inside the mind of a test-taker to deconstruct and connect the dots of a board-style question so you can become a better student, transform how you learn, and excel not only on high-stakes exams, but also in your general medical knowledge. Let’s get started.

A 25-year-old man is brought to the Emergency Department by police for bizarre behavior. His family arrives and states that his behavior changed about eight months ago. He does not abuse drugs or alcohol. On examination, he has a flat affect and appears to be responding to internal stimuli. His speech is disorganized and he says, “I’ve been running from the Russians who are trying to steal my thoughts.” His laboratory and urine studies are unremarkable. What is the most likely diagnosis?

A) Schizoaffective disorder

B) Schizophrenia

C) Schizophreniform disorder

D) Schizotypal personality disorder
