Henri Nouwen said, “When we honestly ask ourselves which person in our lives means the most to us, we often find that it is those who, instead of giving advice, solutions, or cures, have chosen rather to share our pain and touch our wounds with a warm and tender hand.”

When he was 5 years old he was sexually molested by his older cousin. This went on regularly for 7 years. (He had been molested beforehand by another family member). He struggled with homosexuality growing up – it was a serious identity crisis which caused him to be very confused when it came to relationships. Trust was very hard, especially trusting other men. He went through many painful relationships. He dealt with serious matters of lust while in high school. Things got so bad he slept with his best friends brother who was also in a committed relationship.

A high school teacher prayed for him. Two of his grandparents died within a span of two months. During a season of depression and heartache, he decided to go to church. The pastor spoke about love and he surrendered his life to Christ. Though skeptical at first, he got plugged into a small group and remained consistent. This is just the beginning of the story.

Remarkably, Maka Ayers was able to forgive his cousin after about 4 months into his decision to follow Jesus Christ. The Lord used him to help two other men who went thru a similar situation to process their life with Christ. When he courageously told his parents about the sexual molestation, his father broke down and shared that he also was molested when he was young. He realized it was a generational curse in your family. He’s been on a mission trip to Japan and now going to New Zealand. Maka says, “His dad is now consistent in his small group. Everyone else in my family is still kind of a work in progress.”
