A woman – Olga Paule Perrier-Bilbo – files a new federal lawsuit to remove ‘So help me God’ from the oath of U.S. citizenship.
For years the French national and green-card holder dreamed of becoming an American citizen. However, she claims that she is been unable to fulfil that dream due to an unconstitutional violation of her religious freedom. And no modified oath or private citizenship ceremony was good enough for Olga Baggins. It was too late in Olga’s eyes for redemption, the damage had been done, the government had put an unnecessary strain on her beliefs.
Guys and girls, let me be frank, at this point it’s easy for to think this woman is nothing more than a pompous, self-aggrandising, self-righteous twat who gets offended when someone on the bus says men are faster than women or when her doctor tells her that if she wants to have kids she aught to start trying soon as things get much harder as time goes on.
And I’m still unsure whether her motivations were entirely pure.
Even if they are, I think it’s foolish to be so horrified of a religion – especially a religion that built Western culture. It’s on the spiritual and ethical laurels of our religious past that we are currently resting. Does that mean that we should accept everything contained within an ancient text that no one is able to prove the legitimacy of? God, no! However, it certainly should not mean that we then attempt to eradicate our history.
Many require an external moral compass in order to live even relatively ethical lives. And it stands to reason that a country with a external moral compass built into its system will demand and receive more ethical behaviour from its people.
Having said this, Stephen and I agreed that there is a chance we are missing something crucial information here. Information that may sway us from our current standpoint. There very well may be a number of reasons why this woman is a hero for filing this lawsuit. If you can think of any, please let us know in the comments.
Thanks,
Yasin.
