Bonus Episode: Steffany Hanlen & Patrick Francey: Mindset Matters #1

October 06, 2021

“Why the conversation about mindset and why is it important? It’s not just about success, it’s not about getting shit done, it’s not about being uber successful in business or in life. It’s really how we approach business, how we approach life. It’s actually all about us and how we view the world.”
– Patrick Francey

SHOW NOTES

[0:05] Patrick introduces this special edition TEDM and a new opportunity that together with his wife and partner Steffany Hanlen, they are offering called “Mindset Matters.” A bigger, deeper conversation supporting and strengthening mindset.
[03:00] Steffany and Patrick dive right in to discuss Mindset Matters and the big reason behind facilitating and holding space for these meetings and conversation. Curiosity is the inspiration behind it.
[04:46] Definition of mindset. It’s so much deeper than success in business and getting shit done. It’s rooted in our approach and how we view the world. Further, we can shift the filters through which we see and develop curiosity to help navigate how we make decisions particularly when we are under stress and pressure.
[06:32] Patrick offers a question which we can ask ourselves to get to the heart of a situation beyond emotion. Because at times, we connect emotional dots that may not be the truth. Steffany expands on self-agency to discuss values-based decision making and guiding principles which can serve as touchstones on our path amid uncertainty.
[9:03] Breaking down the word mindset: what we are setting our minds and hearts to. In Steffany’s study and work she is observing that we are not at all multi-taskers, rather mono-taskers. With the pervasiveness of technology, we in fact have decreased our capacity to hold multiple containers in our brain of things to consider. Steffany broadens the concept with an example plus a tool to help stay focused in the moment while linking the present to our future goals.
[12:15] Steffany and Patrick discuss the effects of what our body is taking in, and the information this feeds to our brain. Nutrition, exercise, environment, self-talk – these all significantly affect our emotions, which can then create a state of misinformation to our consciousness. When we can slow down and observe our own environment it will help to connect to our personal spirituality and support healthy messages within our consciousness.
[18:06] Developing our understanding of what’s unfolding within and around us can also be of support, so we are not at the emotional effect of it. We don’t fully know what our belief systems are until they’re tested, and right now they are being hammered with divisiveness and cognitive dissonance.
[19:46] Having community and support is immensely helpful, but we also must look at what happens when we are outside of that environment. How are we supporting ourselves on a daily basis when we get hit with challenges? The paradox of emotions we face can be aided by digging into our mindset and building resilience. Steffany highlights the value of the work she and Patrick have done and continue to do to move forward and manage the challenges they encounter.
[22:38] Patrick speaks to the intention behind Mindset Matters and the potential for shifting our lens of possibility to move or even avoid the roadblocks we encounter on our path forward. Again, embracing that mindset and journey of curiosity em...
