SHOW NOTES
[02:08] Patrick introduces his next TEDM guest and friend David Temple.
[03:17] David and Patrick get going with reconnection, and mutual admiration. David talks about how it feels to release his eighth novel, the second in his newest thriller series.
[06:50] The business of a self-published author. David discusses his approach to the business to date and what publishing looks like going forward. Ah, the magic number 10.
[09:25] David shares the story of his first book, an homage to his parents, that spun off three more books and a special experience of filming the movie version which included his Mom.
[11:38] The long journey from conception to film; David discusses the steps from published book to the release of his first long film. It was truly a labour of love.
[16:11] David reflects on his early life, the support from his parents to follow his dreams, and the creative foundation on which he built them. He knew with certainty by the age of 11 or 12, using his unique voice was his instrument.
[18:56] Radio became David’s chosen vehicle of expression, along with a very specific goal which spanned great iterations, cities, and successes over 25 years.
[22:07] David’s Dad used to say, “if you aim at nothing, you’ll hit it every time.” and he took that to heart. With his level of goal specificity, David found there can also be a dark side that rides shotgun.
[25:53] David shares the way in which he initially hedged his bets with the radio business and eventually he did see the writing on the wall with the demise of radio and the thrill of competition. But the love for his craft and the league in which he played was a hell of a ride!
[32:29] Ego and humility – yes, he’s familiar with both. As a “PK” (preacher’s kid) humility was ingrained in David throughout his younger years. A rebel at heart, once unleashed, David enjoyed the many benefits of his wide success; the lifestyle, the people he ran with, and the things he had. He recounts those experiences, and the path that led him home for awhile. This led to another fork in the road.
[37:19] Although he often led with his gut David praises his mentors, including his Dad, who showed up as powerful influences, who believed in him and kept him grounded and focused.
[39:04] There’s been a fair number of them on his journey, but David shares the story of his favourite fork in the road which leads to his third chapter.
[44:56] The art of his craft. David describes a bit about his process of creative writing and the back story to a couple of his novels.
[48:26] Sharpen your pencils! David lays out sound bytes of advice for aspiring writers.
[53:51] David talks about his stake in the podcast explosion and how he swiveled from his first run at it to start talking about what he really loves in The Thrill Zone!
[59:55] Patrick and David riff a bit about fame, keeping it real, treating people well, and truly valuing the rewards.
[64:25] Let’s roll on the rapid-fire thrill ride!
