The Dating Show July - Books

July 28, 2014

In this edition of the Dating Show, Rod and Debbie Russ focus on books and their increase in popularity for those dating, or wanting to improve their sex life, after the massive success of Fifty Shades of Grey.

They talk to author Lucie Novak, who’s written a book about her sexual liberation.

R: In this edition of The Dating Show, we’re talking about reading. Now do you like books Debbie?

D: I do.

R: Now you’ve got a book there.

D: I certainly have a book here.

R: Fifty Shades of Grey! What a classic.

-laughter-

D: An all-time classic.

R: Now, one of the producers has told me you’ve not only just read that, you’ve read it three times!

D: -laughter-

R: You’ve also read the other two. You’ve read them nine times or something?

D: I think that’s a slight exaggeration. I have read the three books in the trilogy, but nine times? No…

R: Why did you read them?

D: I bought 50 Shades of Grey because it was the thing of the moment. It was a couple of years ago and everybody was reading it and I wanted to find out what all the fuss was about.

R: Yeah… And did you enjoy it?

D: The first thing I noticed was that it’s not very well written. There’s a lot of repetition in it. There’s just so many times you can read that she shattered into a million pieces.

R: She what?!

D: Shattered into a million pieces Rod.

R: OK… Right… Now we’re talking about books and we’re hearing an author, a lady called Lucie Novák. She’s written a erotic type book called A Woman With No Strings Attached, A Memoir. Julian Perkins put the questions to her.

J: How did you get into erotic novels?

L: Well, it was my experience really. I sort of tried to do something slightly different because I had a partner, I have a partner who I adore a lot, and who is not sexually jealous. What we did was basically, I was experimenting with his knowledge and consent. It was quite exciting and unusual so I wrote a novel about it and the background to it.

J: OK, so this is written from your own personal experience?

L: Yes.

J: So what gave you inspiration to do this, were you an avid reader of Fifty Shades?

L: I never erotica funnily enough. My book isn’t really erotica. It’s like a memoir really. And I always read a lot, and I wanted to write. When I’d tried to write something, I’d stop because it wasn’t good enough. When I started writing this, it suddenly seemed good enough. It just flowed off my fingers, it was quite exciting. I was quite to carry on. It was very exciting and was something completely different to what I normally do.

J: Now of course in recent years, we’ve all heard of Fifty Shades of Grey and lots of others as well at the moment, erotic novels, especially by women are all the rage at the moment. Why do you think this is going on?

L: I’m not sure. I would not call my book an erotic novel because it is not meant to arouse. It’s more like one woman’s sexual revolution, finding out that sex can be fun even when it’s not with love. It is about a woman over 50, and when you’re older you can enjoy sex as much as much as a man can. There are a lot of taboos about, like the taboo that women do not like “no strings”. That might not be quite right. There’s also a taboo about older women not being interested. That might not be quite right either because they don’t have to worry about contraception and lots of other things. I think the society became more open about it and so it’s easier to write a book with this sort of theme.I still think there is quite a lot of double standards around and paradoxically the double standards make it more exciting for people to publish or read books like this because they feel they are crossing some sort of boundaries. There are different standards for men and women out there.

J: And now that the book is finished, do your experiences carry on? Or is it that now in the past?

L: I’ve finished doing it for other personal reasons actually. i don’t regret doing it, I think I learned a lot. In a way, I’d had a sheltered life before, I was married for 34 years and the sex in the marriage was fine but not terribly exciting and I sort of matured quite late. I learned new things, and I think it always was a win-win situation for a lot of people. I didn’t destroy anybody’s marriage. There were two occasions when it looked like somebody would fall in love with me and I stopped immediately because that was not the deal. My partner probably got more excited generally because of the experience. It was fun writing the book.

J: And I presume you’ve learned quite a lot, so your sex life with your partner has probably improved a lot?

L: I think definitely, dramatically so yes! I also think I became a better doctor because I feel that sex is important in life and it’s important in life for older people too. I make my patients find out things that they may not find easily to talk about, but open questions so they can either tell me something or not. Certainly men have some problems that can stop them enjoying sex. In a way, as a doctor, that was quite a discovery. I’ve found that it is definitely influencing my medicine in a positive way.

J: Is this being published online, or in hardback or softbook?

L: It’s paperback and an ebook and it’s on Amazon ever since yesterday, so it’s very new.

R: I can’t believe Julian asked that question “is it being published in a hardback?”

D: Or softback!

R: Anyway that was Lucie Novák and her book is A Woman With No Strings Attached, A Memoir. I need to meet this Lucie Novák.

D: She has an amazing accent.

R: She does. She’s from the Czech Republic.

D: And I love the concept actually, it’s empowering for the older woman and Mummy porn has been big over the last few years, but this is clearly a different genre.

R: Yeah, OK. I’m actually writing my own book at the moment Debbie.

D: Ooh!

R: It’s the search for the Holy Grail. It’s an erotic novel.

D: Oh yes…

R: It’s called the search for the Holy Grail.

D: Sounds familiar?

R: I might call it the Quest for the G Spot.
