The Dating Show April 2014 - Part Two

April 08, 2014

In the second edition of The Dating Show in April we focus on your hair when you’re going on a date. That’s for both men and women.

Here’s a transcript of the podcast.

R: In this edition of the Dating Show, we’re talking about hair. You’ve got lovely hair, Eliza.

E: I know I have, I can’t necessarily give you quite the same compliment because yours looks a little sparse on top.

-laughter-

E: What? I’m only saying…

R: You’ve got lovely hair though. Is it naturally curly?

E: Yes.

R: Is it?

E: Yeah…

R: Do you spend a lot of time on it?

E: I actually spend no time on it and I think that you’re being ironic because you can see it’s generally a little bit of a mess but that’s how I like it.

R: You look like a gypsy.

E: I know! I actually quite like that look.

R: I like the look as well!

E: Ohh…

-music-

R: Debbie, tell me about your hair, what colour is it?

D: My hair is bright red.

R: Bright red?

D: Yes.

R: That’s brave, isn’t it?

D: Well being a hairdresser, you do get a chance to experiment a little bit more I suppose.

R: That’s presumably not your natural colour.

D: Sadly it isn’t no.

R: Now, let’s look at hair when you’re dating. It’s a tricky subject. I’ve got images in my brain, the Kevin Keegan perm, probably not a good look.

D: No.

R: The Bobby Charlton sweepover, probably not a good look.

D: -laughter- No.

R: But Johnny Depp in Pirates of the Caribbean, quite a nice look.

D: Yeah, not bad, not bad. Everyone’s different. It just totally depends on what suits you and what doesn’t. All I would say is keep your hair clean, if you’ve got hair, keep it combed. That’s always a good start.

R: -laughter-

D: It’s just a case of looking after what you have, keep it clean, and keep it tidy.

R: Many men will be sort of follically challenged. What’s the best thing to do in that situation? The Bobby Charlton sweepover doesn’t seem to work.

D: No, it’s not good for windy days! What I would suggest would be keeping it short and keeping it tidy. It’s the best way to go really. I don’t think the old combover works these days.

R: Is colouring a good idea if you’re getting a bit grey?

D: For the men, I don’t think it’s a good look. I really don’t. I think it’s obviously coloured these days. If you’re going to do it, have it done properly. Have it done tastefully. Buying stuff from the shops isn’t really the answer. I think it just looks really false and it looks like you’re trying to be someone that you’re not.

R: Now unfortunately in the 80s, I can remember that, I had highlights, which I thought looked really good, but a lot of people, didn’t. Are many men having highlights these days?

D: There aren’t that many. I think it’s not like it used to be. I think really, really short hair seems to be fashionable at the moment. It’s really hard to highlight really short hair, which probably isn’t a bad thing actually.

R: And men should really pay attention to their ears and also eyebrows because they tend to go all over the place, don’t they?

D: Keep them trimmed! Keep an eye on your nose hair and your eyebrow hair. It’s not easy trimming your eyebrow hair. When you have a haircut, always ask your hairdresser to do it. It’s really difficult to get the right angle to make sure you don’t start cutting any skin. Keep it trimmed. Ear hair as well! There’s nothing more of a turn off than seeing hair coming out of places it shouldn’t be.

R: And women, what tips can you give them? They’re probably more adept at all this, aren’t they?

D: Yeah, I’d say so. But again, I’d say less is more. Not too much product, keep your hair in tip top condition with plenty of treatment. Generally, more women tend to colour their hair then men but these days with easy mesh and tin foil highlights we can always a better effect with really nice, classy colours. Again, look after your hair, keep it tidy. Having shiny, soft, natural hair is lovely.

R: It may be a stupid question, but should you actually watch your hair every day?

D: It’s not essential. It’s different for everyone. If you’ve got really dry hair, I wouldn’t recommend it because you don’t give the natural oils a chance to come through, but if you’re going out, you know, I would wash my hair if I was going out. It’s personal choice. With the conditioners that we can get these days, they’re really good conditioners, they’re always going to condition your hair. If you did choose to wash your hair every day, that’s fine.

R: And just going back to men, are wigs a good idea?

D: No.

R: -laughter-

D: If there’s anything that’s a turn off, it’s a wig or a hairpiece, I think you should try and be as natural as possible. It’s such a false impression. They never look very good.

R: Have you ever been out with a man with a wig Eliza?

E: -laughter- I really haven’t, no.

R: Have you ever…

E: …well not that I know of anyway!

R: From many of your men, have you been out with some strange hairdos?

E: No…

R: No…

E: Not really… I mean, like sort of punky style and stuff like that, well yeah.

R: Yeah…

E: I’ve also been out with super long hair, and a big long beard.

R: Really?

E: Like a sort of Harley bloke.

R: Jesus.

E: Well yeah, but he looked like Hercules. He was really massive.

R: Do you pay much attention to a man’s hair?

E: As long as it’s clean, then no I don’t. Obviously if it’s not that sort of flipped over look that you talked about earlier, that’s awful. If you’re going bald, then we all know so just leave it going bald.

R: And a bald man, is that attractive?

E: I don’t mind at all.

R: Really? You don’t mind much do you?
