Jimmy Smith is a man who walks his talk; he's a personal trainer who is passionate about helping people get the results they want. He's an expert in health and wellness who has been featured in Men's Health, Maximum Fitness and Men's Fitness (among others). has spoken to the Cleveland Brain Health Clinic and the Voluntary Anti-Doping Agency. In other words, he knows his stuff.
On today's show we dig into why people aren't getting results in the gym, five things we can do to feel better and look better and some awesome tips for better sleep.
His top five suggestions to look better and feel better right now:
1. Optimize your sleep.
Even losing one hour of sleep decreases testosterone, lowers your insulin resistance and increases your risk of diabetes, cancer and depression.
2. Build compliance with your diet.
Focus on what 2 things you can do today to make your diet better. Don't want to give up your Starbucks? Then eat more vegetables. Jimmy recommends you find 1 or 2 things you can change today or this week and do them. For most of us we can add more vegetables to our daily diet and take fish oil.
3. Move better.
Find a way to move more! We all sit too much. Science is telling us sitting isn't healthy; it decreases our life span, lowers our insulin resistance (increasing the chance of diabetes), and makes us prematurely age. So get up and move more throughout your day.
4. Start to commit to a work out.
The best work out is the one you stick with. Get to the gym and get your body moving for 30, even 45 minutes three times a week.
5. Check your expectations.
Remember if you are working out to lose extra weight, it will take time to drop it. It took you time to gain the weight so it'll take you time to lose it. Be patient. There is no magic pill, no overnight cure but with consistent action you'll achieve your desired result.
Jimmy also shares some sleep hacks for us. As we talked about earlier sleep is incredibly important to being and maintaining a healthy life. One of the suggestions he has is to wear pajamas to bed, if you don't already. It may sound silly but it actually creates a psychological trigger that tells your mind it's time to start winding down for sleep.
