While there are many people who say they are fluent in multiple languages not all of them can back it up. Today's guest can and does. Idahosa Ness is the creator and founder of The Mimic Method, a program for pronunciation training and accent reduction for language learners.

On this episode we talk about why mimicking is so key to sounding like a native speaker in any language, why the social element plays a key role in language development and the surprising connection between learning music and learning a language. Idahosa Ness has always learned languages faster than people around him and one day he realized why: when learning any new language he would mimic native speakers, rather than using his native tongue to speak new words.

He carried that skill with him through college and beyond. He taught himself Spanish while living in Mexico after high school, learned Chines while in college and then moved to Brazil after graduation. He taught English on the side and also immersed himself in the music scene of his new country. One day he made the connection between mimicking, foreign language learning and music.

Idahosa was on a bus when he had this "ah ha!" moment and he literally made the bus driver stop so he could run home and jot down his thoughts. He took his revelation to the streets and spoke with Brazilians and gringos alike, testing out his new theory.

Within a few minutes of speaking with each person he had them easily pronouncing words in a foreign language. Building on that success he honed his new approach and refined it until he could offer it virtually. From there he came up with the present day Mimic Method, a tool to help people learn languages through music and mimicking.

On today's show we dive into the nuances of learning a language, especially as it relates to expanding and stretching your identity and how acquiring a language relates to learning music.

Stretching and expanding your identity isn't a new topic at The Art of Charm, and one of the best ways to do this than to learn a new language. Idahosa's program and his own style of quick language learning comes from his ability to embrace the process, and stretch himself. We explain more of the details of this in this show.
