41. How to Teach Sensitive Topics – The case of sexual assault prevention training (Dr Sara Crann)

May 19, 2021

Teaching topics that are sensitive, personal, or even taboo, can be extremely difficult. The skills needed go beyond good pedagogy and many other considerations need to be addressed. To discuss best practices and strategies for teaching sensitive topics, I am joined by a person running a ground breaking program that is teaching sexual assault prevention strategies to young women in Canada

Dr Sara Crann is an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Windsor, Canada. She is the Co-Principal Investigator on a Public Health Agency of Canada grant to adapt and evaluate the Enhanced Assess, Acknowledge, Act (EAAA) Sexual Assault Resistance Program, also know as the Flip the Script program. This program is aimed at women in their first year of university, now also being adapted to adolescent girls, and teaches them ways to defend themselves against sexual violence. The program also addresses topics such as the definition of consent, discusses positive attitudes about sex and addresses society's pattern of victim-blaming. Flip the Script has proven to be a very effective program and I’m so glad to have Sara here to discuss how they address the teaching of such sensitive topics.
